Out-of-Town Race Checklist

Heading out of town for your next run? Be it a 5K or half marathon, don’t end up at the startling line without your trusty running shoes. Use this race checklist to pack confidently so your biggest race-day worry is getting across the finish line.

Clothing:

  • Running hat or visor
  • Running shorts
  • Singlet or running top
  • Supportive sports bra
  • Running shoes
  • Running socks
  • Running tights or pants
  • Running gloves
  • Sweats for cool morning starts
  • Arm warmers
  • Lightweight shell or running jacket
  • Post-race change of clothes and shoes

Tools and Accessories:

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Ponytail holder
  • Handheld water bottle or hydration belt
  • BodyGlide or other anti-chafing cream
  • Watch/heart rate monitor
  • iPod with charger and headphones
  • Camera
  • RoadID
  • Race and hotel confirmations

Fuel:

  • GU, Clif Shot Blocks, Honey Stingers Chews, or Jelly Belly Sport Beans
  • Protein bars for recovery
  • Instant coffee or energy drinks (Try Zipfizz!)
  • Sports drinks

As needed:

  • Shoe insoles or orthotics
  • Knee brace or other support devices
  • Foam roller for after race
  • Safety pins for race number
  • Vitamins
  • Band-Aids
  • Ibuprofen
  • Start line drop bag

Final tips: Keep changing weather in mind and pack for anything. Also, avoid using new items on race day. Try everything beforehand, including food, to prevent problems mid-race. Last, wear your race outfit on a long training run to assure it doesn’t chafe or rub.
