Carol Masheter, a local mountaineer, summitted this iconic mountain for the second time on Christmas Eve Day, 2007. Climbing Kilimanjaro is like passing through all four seasons in six days. Near the start of the climb, colobus monkeys swing through the verdant rain forest. Higher on the mountain, iridescent bee eaters dart among giant lobelia and giant groundsel after the mid morning sun has melted the previous evening's snow. The summit is ice and snow with a fantastic view of the plains below, teeming with wildlife. Carol has been climbing big, glaciated peaks since 1972, including Everest in Spring, 2008, Kilimanjaro in December, 2007, Aconcagua in January, 2007, Cho Oyu in 2005 and over a dozen glaciated peaks in Bolivia, Ecuador and East Africa.
